Nobody designs for failure
The first system I inherited failed two runs in five. Not through bad luck.

I've been taking things apart since I was a kid, mostly to find out whether I could put them back together. At thirteen I wrote a magic 8-ball program, and it was the first time something clicked — I wasn't especially good at school, but I could clearly do this. That turned into a first-class computer science degree and, later, a department I started and led at my current company, with no senior above me to learn from. Everything I know, I went and found. These days the work I like most is the kind that makes me question my own judgement. Architecture, mostly — decisions that seem fine for eighteen months and then quietly collapse under their own weight. I'd rather find the flaw in my own design than have someone else find it in production.

What I want next is a team where I can keep growing toward staff level while helping the people coming up behind me. I didn't have a mentor. I've since learned I understand things best when I'm explaining them to someone else, and I'd like to be the person I didn't have.

I travel as much as I can. I like seeing how differently people solve the same problems, and how fast the world is moving in fields I'll never work in.
Work
Feb 2025 — Present
Started and led the engineering function. Built the company's internal SaaS platforms, including Unity, its core system.
Inherited a stack of business-critical automations built on Make, a low-code tool, failing around two runs in five. Rebuilt them as Python services on FastAPI, containerised with Docker and Portainer, with Prometheus and Grafana for observability. Failures went from routine to rare — and visible when they happen.
Brought the company onto sane security foundations: centralised password management, security training, IT infrastructure ownership. Drove AI adoption from essentially zero to daily use across the business.
Jul 2024 — Dec 2024
Contract infrastructure work across national petrol forecourt sites. Site surveys, fibre installation planning, data cabinet and switch configuration.
2021 — 2024
Ran coding sessions for fellow students across second and third year as a peer mentor.
Sep 2017 — Sep 2019
Managed client networks end to end — monitoring, maintenance, on-site and remote support.

Journey
Six lessons from building software, in the order I learned them. Each one starts with something breaking.
